Research & Development Engineer

Signal Processing

Location: Bristol, UK (Remote 3 days per week)


Our client was founded in 2006 to develop and commercialise radio-wave radar breast imaging technology. The company's system received European regulatory approval in 2015 and is currently deployed in pre-commercialisation clinical trials at several breast cancer imaging centres throughout the UK. 

With the current screening system, based on X-rays, detecting only 28% of all breast cancers each year, despite a $1bn global mammography market, we believe that the solution to tackling this disease is frequent screening from an early age. X-rays are not able to deliver this. The system is quick, comfortable and non-ionising, supporting a paradigm-shifting approach to beating breast cancer.

 Job Purpose and Primary Objective 

Contribute to the delivery of the companies ambitious R&D and new product development programme.

Responsible for the design, evaluation and improvement of an [radio wave, electromagnetic, radiofrequency (RF)] based breast imaging system.

Developing and improving algorithms and techniques for enhancing imaging and data generated by our system.

Signal and image processing software design, development and test.

Maintenance and improvement activities related to the company's products.

Formal design, implementation, testing and release of software products arising from the above activities


Roles and Responsibilities 


•             Develop and implement novel radar imaging technique for medical applications;

•             Assessing technologies to improve/ extend the Company’s radar imaging techniques;

•             Making contributions to R&D resulting in novel functionality and new product offerings;

•             Documentation in forms of technical papers, and presentation; and

•             Contribute to patents applications.


Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•             Good solid background in signal processing.

•             Experience in wave-to-image processing algorithms. Such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR), focusing/reconstruction, beamforming, and compressive sensing.

•             Experience in image artefact analysis and solution development.

•             Abilities to interpret data in order to solve a specific problem.

•             MATLAB (or close equivalent) prototyping skills.


•             Experience in automatic target recognition (image or non-image domain).

•             Knowledge of medical imaging (e.g., Ultrasound, CT, and/or MRI) theory, reconstruction and applications.

•             Experience in medical imaging or biomedical signal statistical analysis.

•             Familiar with machine learning paradigm and pattern recognition techniques, e.g. feature extraction, classification, cross-validation, and robustness assessment.

•             Experience working in a regulated commercial environment (medical, aviation, automotive) including traceability requirements and risk management.

•             Demonstrated ability to model and simulate complex array and antenna design using a variety of open-source or commercial electromagnetic simulation tools.
